This expansion marks a major step forward in strengthening the local healthcare workforce and ensuring that more students have access to high-quality nursing education right here in the Four Corners region.

A Promise to the Community

For both institutions, the agreement represents more than just an academic expansion, it’s a long-term investment in the community’s well-being.

“This is more than a formal agreement; it’s a promise to our community,” said Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass, President of San Juan College. “At San Juan College, one of our core priorities is to develop the workforce our community needs, both now and in the future. We take that responsibility seriously. Every program we offer, every partnership we pursue, is shaped by that mission: to prepare our students not just for jobs, but for careers that matter.”

The MOU between SJC and SJRMC ensures that students receive the training, support and financial assistance they need to succeed.

Investing in Nursing Education and Workforce Growth

Participating students entering into an agreement with SJRMC will have an opportunity to receive a $4,800 living stipend that will allow them to more fully focus on their education.

SJRMC is providing generous funding to support San Juan College’s recruitment of additional full-time nursing faculty members. These educators will receive a $10,000 annual stipend in addition to their base salary, enabling the college to enhance program capacity and accommodate more students.

“As a community-owned, not-for-profit health system, San Juan Regional Medical Center is deeply committed to serving the people of our region,” said Jason Rounds, President and CEO of SJRMC. “This partnership represents more than an expansion of nursing education—it’s an investment in the future of healthcare in our community. By growing local talent, we’re not only strengthening our healthcare system but also creating meaningful opportunities close to home and reinforcing our long-term commitment to the well-being of this region for generations to come.”

Preparing the Next Generation of Nurses

The SJC Associate Degree in Nursing program can be completed in two years over five semesters and is designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce.

As the role of nurses continues to expand SJC’s program ensures that students are prepared not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them.

Building a Healthier Future Together

The partnership between SJC and SJRMC sends a clear and inspiring message: local solutions, built by local partners, create lasting impact. By investing in education, workforce development and community collaboration, both institutions are shaping a healthier, more resilient future for the region.
