Learn to play guitar in just one session—even if you’ve never picked one up. Or, uncover the mystery and power of the pipe organ, the “King of Instruments.” Whether you're a seasoned musician or just getting back into playing, our music ensembles offer something for everyone. Play in the San Juan College Orchestra, sing in the Community Choir or join the Community Band. These non-credit options provide joyful music-making in a welcoming community.

No experience needed—just bring your curiosity.

Students in music ensembles can register in three different ways: regular credit enrollment (including dual credit students), Encore enrollment, and non-credit enrollment. For regular credit enrollment (including dual credit enrollment), visit Registration and Records at San Juan College. The options through the Community Learning Center below are designed for community members who do not require college credit.

 

Music Ensembles

The San Juan College Orchestra is an ensemble devoted to the rehearsal and performance of orchestral literature of various historical backgrounds; activities include full ensemble rehearsal, occasional sectionals, individual practice, and public performances with the development of knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for aspects of music ranging from the Renaissance to the Modern Era. There is one performance per semester. Prerequisites: Previous experience on a traditional orchestral string, wind, brass, or percussion instrument as well as music reading experience.

The SJC Concert Choir is open to anybody who loves to sing! Perform choral music from various time periods, genres, and cultures. Focus will be placed on the development of vocal production and tone quality, balance and blend, and music reading proficiency. Field trips may be required.

Both college and community musicians are invited to play. From classical to jazz, from opera overtures to blazing marches, this band does it all! Make fine music with the Four Corner’s oldest continuous community
concert band (MUSC 2120). Make friends with other musicians who love what they do. The Concert Band is featured in performances through the year, open to the public. Enrollment is open to all players with a minimum of high school playing ability, regardless of age.

In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. Learn to play the way professionals do-using chords. The chord method is fun and dramatically easier to learn than reading notes. Fee includes the online book, online recorded follow up lessons, a recording of the class and also an optional live periodic question and answer session. Class is held online using Zoom and is partly hands on instruction and partly lecture demonstration. Ages 13+. 2.5 hrs

Discover the pipe organ, often called the “King of Instruments” for good reason. It’s a powerful, multi-keyboard instrument that starts with the basics of a piano but offers so much more. It can create its own unique voice or mimic the sound of an entire orchestra. This three-session class, introduces you to the fascinating world of the organ—how it works, what it can do, and why it’s still played in churches, concert halls, and theaters today. 6 hrs
