The Suite Life at SJC
San Juan College celebrated the opening of Nizhóní Sunrise Suites August 12. The beautiful 37,552 square-foot campus housing facility is located on the corner of Sunrise Parkway and Education Drive on the San Juan College Farmington Campus. The 150-bed, three-floor building with one-, two-and three bed units will provide an array of amenities for residents, including a spacious common area with a shared student kitchen, as well as TV/study areas on each floor. Residents have 24-hour, on-campus security, free parking, fast Wi-Fi, and on-site laundry facilities. Students can choose from three convenient and affordable meal-plans to use at Mary’s Kitchen. The fully furnished suites have shared bathrooms, and each floor has access to a sizeable study area with whiteboards and ample seating.
Residents enjoy the outdoor activity space including a large courtyard with a grassy area and an outdoor grill. On the west side of the building, students appreciate the impressive fireside views from both the inside and outside all year long with the large indoor/outdoor fireplace. Near the front entrance of the building, residents can air up their bicycle tires using the free air pump station.
The proximity to campus walking trails, SJC Health and Human Performance Center, disc golf course and outdoor playing fields are just some of the advantages of living on campus. Other benefits include meeting new people, developing lasting friendships and having convenient access to campus and student-sponsored events.
At Nizhóní Sunrise Suites, residents can easily connect with all the academic support services, including tutoring, mentoring, computer labs and the library. With a shorter commute, students have more time for studying, working on class projects or spending time with friends. Additionally, student housing residents tend to have an improved educational experience and better academic performance.
Dekker, Perich and Sabatini provided the architectural design for the building, while Jaynes Corporation served as the project construction manager.
“Campus housing has been a service the Board of Trustees and the College have wanted for more than two decades,” says President Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass. “This fall, that dream turned into a reality. We are so excited to be able to provide our full-time student with the opportunity to live the ‘suite life’ on campus.”
