The Henderson Fine Arts Center (HFAC) will kick off the new year in fashionable style with The Art of Fashion exhibition at the Henderson Fine Art Gallery.
The Art of Fashion features a selection of costumes from San Juan College’s (SJC) Theatre Department, along with examples of historical costume and fashion design illustrations. “In our era of fast fashion, it is easy to forget that not all that long ago, every piece of clothing was handmade, an artform in and of itself.” says Julie Napientek, HFAC Art Gallery Coordinator. “This exhibit aims to honor the history of innovative fashion design, both in terms of the technical draftsmanship involved in fashion illustration and the skilled craftsmanship that goes into creating the physical garments.”
Fashion and clothing help to shape our identities; they are a symbol of who we are and where we come from. Therefore, in addition to Western fashion, examples of traditional dress from around the world will be highlighted as well.
The Art of Fashion will also delve into the history, origins and meanings of ubiquitous patterns commonly seen on textiles. What exactly is paisley supposed to be and how did the ancient Kashmiri design take Europe by storm? Do you know the difference between tartan plaid, tattersall plaid and madras plaid? You will learn the answers to these questions and more when you see this exhibit, and hopefully walk away with a new appreciation when you get dressed each morning!
From period pieces to contemporary creations, the exhibition showcases an extensive variety of styles, materials and techniques used in costume design. It is a stunning opportunity to appreciate not only the final products but also the artistry and craftsmanship of haute couture, as reflected in the rich history and innovation of costume design.
The Art of Fashion runs through January 26 at the HFAC Gallery and is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during most events in the Henderson Performance Hall.
