San Juan College is redefining academic support with the launch of CurioXR, a nonprofit educational platform that delivers engaging, virtual reality (VR) learning experiences.
A New Era of Student Learning
Beginning in Fall 2025, students now have access to immersive tutoring sessions designed to make studying more interactive, personalized and fun.
How VR Tutoring Works
Unlike traditional tutoring, VR offers a dynamic, distraction-free environment where students can dive deeper into their coursework. Through CurioXR, students can:
- Explore interactive 3D models and guided simulations
- Participate in collaborative environments and group activities
- Experience virtual tours of educational settings and museums
- Use an AI assistant that functions like a built-in tutor
This hands-on approach allows students to learn by doing, making even the most challenging subjects more approachable and engaging
Current Subjects Offered in VR and Ones to Come
While VR tutoring is especially powerful for STEM subjects such as:
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Biology,
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Math
The opportunities don’t stop there. San Juan College faculty and staff are actively exploring how VR can expand into areas like art tours, language learning and even professional training simulations for customer service and healthcare.
Dedicated VR Tutoring Space
To make this program widely accessible, the SJC Tutoring Center has created a dedicated VR room (Room 1611M). Equipped with three MetaQuest 2 headsets and a large screen for group sessions, the space allows students to study individually or join stream parties where they can observe and discuss VR sessions together. Behind the scenes, the IT and User Services teams have ensured seamless access with upgraded Wi-Fi and single sign-on technology.

By embracing VR technology, San Juan College is not only enhancing current learning experiences but also preparing students for a future where immersive tools are an integral part of higher education and the workplace. This pilot program highlights the College’s commitment to innovation and student success.
